Prostate Cancer Program
We strongly support prostate cancer screening with PSA blood tests for men who are likely to benefit. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recently updated its recommendation to a “C,” supporting individualized decision-making. We encourage discussion of screening with your urologist or primary care physician.
Seed Implantation
Under the vision and guidance of Dr. Charles Mendenhall, ROA maintains accreditation through the internationally recognized Seattle Prostate Brachytherapy Seed Implant Program.
Learn more about seed implantation
ROA offers prostate brachytherapy seed implants in collaboration with local urologists. We currently implant seeds in 100–125 men per year, achieving outcomes that exceed national benchmarks. Emerging evidence suggests that boosting the prostate with seed implants can provide superior results compared to external beam radiation or radical prostatectomy (JAMA. 2018;319(9):896–905).
Other Treatment Options
Not all men are candidates for seed implants, sometimes due to prostate anatomy or baseline urinary function. For those who are not candidates or who choose non-surgical options, we offer external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) delivered with advanced technologies such as IMRT (intensity-modulated radiation therapy) via Tomotherapy or VMAT (volumetric modulated arc therapy). All treatments utilize image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) for precise targeting and reduced side effects.
We also use SpaceOAR hydrogel in select patients to reduce the risk of high-grade proctitis, and encourage discussion of this option with your physician.
ROA offers a full spectrum of curative treatment options for prostate cancer, including:
- Brachytherapy (seed implants)
- External Beam Radiation Therapy (EBRT)
- IMRT via Tomotherapy or VMAT
- IGRT using real-time 3D imaging for enhanced precision
- Hormonal therapy (blockade or modulation)
Each patient’s treatment plan is carefully individualized to maximize effectiveness while minimizing side effects.
APEx Accreditation Facility
Get to know our accredited practice.
We are pleased to announce that our facility has been accredited by the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) through APEx – Accreditation Program for Excellence®. APEx is an accreditation program developed by ASTRO that validates a radiation oncology facility’s excellence in delivering high-quality patient care. Accreditation through APEx is a voluntary and rigorous multi-step process during which a facility’s practices are evaluated using consensus-based standards. A facility must demonstrate its safety and quality processes and that it adheres to patient-centered care by promoting effective communication, coordinated treatments, and strong patient engagement. Our facility has demonstrated those processes and continues to engage them in our patients’ care. Learn more about how accredited facilities such as ours use the process of accreditation to benefit patients and find additional educational materials on radiation therapy treatment on the ASTRO patient information site, RTAnswers.org.
